Kimchi ready for blast off

A special kind of kimchi has been cleared for a space mission this year. The bacteria-free kimchi will blast off along with Korea's first astronaut. Top Korean scientists developed the kimchi. It was approved by Russian space authorities.

Instant noodles and cinnamon tea have also been approved for the mission due in April. The foods were all developed by the state-run food research body.
Kimchi usually contains bacteria which is healthy. But the bacteria becomes stronger in space and can be dangerous. The state food research body is also developing other Korean foods for space crews.

The South Korean government has selected Ko San as the country's first astronaut. Ko is a 30-year-old computer science engineer. He'll travel into space on a Russian-made Soyuz rocket on April 8.
Ko will fly to the International Space Station. He'll stay there for up to eight days.
